Terraced Garden, Dorking

This was a full redesign of a deep terraced garden, where we tackled the steep layout by creating new levels, connected by oak-clad steps.

Terraced Garden Project Overview

This was a complete redesign of a terraced garden in Dorking, which required major regrading for levelling and design. Due to the steep terrace and the poor access to the property, this was a challenging project for the Taming Mother Nature team, but completely rewarding.

We relied on construction machinery to construct this new garden, installing block retaining walls, oak cladding, steps, and turfing to create a new landscape that is just as beautiful as it is functional.

Narrow Access For Level Establishment

The first step in this project was to establish levels for the new layout. As this is a steep, terraced garden, the existing landscape was uneven and difficult to manage. Creating these new levels proved to be a challenge for our team due to the poor access to the site.

This property in Dorking not only had a terraced garden, but also a steep driveway and a narrow side path. This meant that we could not use all of our equipment and instead had to rely on a mini digger to establish the new levels and install the new features.

Once the levels were set, we constructed retaining walls using concrete blocks. These were reinforced with steel bars to ensure lasting stability, safety and structure within this terraced garden.

Design Details And Step Installation

To complement the property and create a bespoke, engaging design, we used oak sleepers as cladding on the retaining walls and steps. This oak had been milled down to a reduced thickness at our timber yard, allowing an easy and efficient installation as decorative cladding.

Indian Sandstone was used as a finishing cladding on the steps and walls to provide a natural stone pattern. This complements the warm oak cladding perfectly, creating a rustic appearance to the garden.

Finishing Touches With Artificial Turf

The final stage of this terraced garden redesign was installing premium-quality artificial turf. Artificial turf provides year-round greenery and functionality without the maintenance of traditional lawns. We only rely on the highest quality turf for our landscaping projects, ensuring a lasting solution for all outdoor spaces.
