This modern garden design project took place in Coulsdon, Surrey, where our clients were seeking a better layout for their back garden. Our modern garden design focuses on the height change between the main porcelain terrace and the lawn, using this as the focal point of the entire landscape.
With this height contrast and the layout of the porcelain paved terrace, the garden has been thoughtfully designed to take full advantage of sunlight. On sunny afternoons and summer evenings, our clients can spend time on the rear porcelain patio where they can continue to soak in the rays until the late hours.
As this particular area captures a lot of sunlight during the day, it is the perfect area for outdoor dining, entertainment and relaxation. The porcelain patio has been installed on a solid foundation, ensuring years of use no matter the occasion.
Making Use Of Height
The transition between the main terrace and the lower lawn area is provided through elegant steps and risers, installed by our team. This is a significant portion of this modern garden design, as it ties the landscape together and ensures our clients can take advantage of the entire space.
The risers are bespoke and uniquely designed to blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetic of the landscape and the property. This is further enhanced by the retaining walls with their smooth, contemporary finish which also complements the property’s architecture.
While the terrace and lawn are two separate parts of this modern garden design, we did not want to close off any section of the garden. This is why we used modern composite railings, fitted with sleek wire balustrades across the barrier of the upper terrace.
These provide both safety and style while maintaining an open feel to the upper section of the garden. As well as creating an open, airy feel to the terrace, these contemporary materials support the modern garden design by keeping it simple yet effective and practical for our client’s lifestyle.
Finishing Touches And Future Appeal
The lower section of the garden is covered with a newly seeded lawn, which is ready to establish itself as a lush, green carpet come spring. Once it has come into full bloom, this new lawn will create a beautiful contrast to the more structured elements of this modern garden design.
